About the movie: Detective Teddy Daniels (DiCaprio) and his partner Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo) have been sent to the cursed island of Shutter Island to track down a deranged killer named Rachel Solando (Emily Mortimer), who has escaped from her cell at the Ashecliffe psychiatric prison and is now successfully hiding somewhere. The year is 1954, and America has yet to recover from the aftermath of World War II and is, moreover, surviving in a state of constant paranoia over both perceived and real communist threats. Daniels is a textbook example of this era. The war veteran is still haunted by the horrors he experienced and must also cope with the death of his wife. One could sarcastically say that, in the context of the investigation, he has arrived at the right place. But something is amiss on this island, and the experienced detective instinctively senses it. For example, he is convinced that the treatment methods applied to patients by the local doctors, led by Dr. John Cawley (Ben Kingsley), are not entirely in accordance with the Hippocratic Oath. The other side of the coin, however, is the question of the detective’s sanity, which is being subjected to ever-greater strain due to traumatic experiences from the past and a rather terrifying and disheartening present.
